About: Legends of Canadian Motocross
LEGENDS OF CANADIAN MOTOCROSS (LCM) is a project that came out of the need to record the history of Motocross in Canada by creating a bridge from the rich, colourful past of motocross in Canada with the rising stars of tomorrow.
The foundation of LCM is an extensive archive of one photographer’s stunning images spanning over four decades of Canadian motocross. These photos bring the history of Canadian motocross to life for younger fans, while triggering memories of excitement, drama, and fierce competition for spectators and participants of the actual events.
Most of the LCM images were taken by professional photographer Bill Petro, recipient of the 2013 Bar & Hedy Hodgson Award for his “significant contribution to the preservation of Canadian motorcycling heritage” from the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
In addition to his own library, Petro collected and organized photographs of Canadian motocross from the 1950s and 1960s from other sources, making this the largest and most extensive collection of motocross in North America. Encouraging other photographers and writers to submit their contributions to LCM will, in time, create the largest archive of its kind, and preserve our history in a new innovative way. These images are also available for online viewing to LCM members via the NAMSIA link on the LCM website.
Enhanced by the enthusiastic participation of legendary Canadian motocross stars, the LCM Tour will link the past to the future, with proceeds helping to fund promising young motocross riders in major international events such as the FIM Motocross of Nations and the FIM Junior Motocross World Championship.
